Lazing around near the jheel.

Attending Rhetoric and Composition class after watching 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' is JUST not possible. I'm sorry, Rimi-di, but Depp is too delectable, and we needed to mull him over in our mind after watching the movie for the Literature and the Other Arts course. *grins*

This man takes every character he plays and just bloody OWNS them. What a spin he gave to dear old Willy Wonka.

@ Doubletake, Doublethink: Sure, that he is! I don't know of any other actor who could pull off purple robes, plum coloured lipstick and that hairstyle, and still look yummy!

@ Elendil: It sure is fantastic the way he gets under the skin of every character he plays. The funny thing is, most people don't like him as Wonka, they say it's an insult to Dahl's genius, that Depp's performance was tremendously gay. I don't agree, somehow, I think he gave a completely new perspective to Wonka's character.

@ The Soliloquist: Haha yeah... Ranging from Gregory Peck to Josh Lucas. Aah, that was one memorable discussion! *grins*

Did you notice Depp's teeth? Shit...I stared and stared. His haircut was a little weird, though. But then...so is mine! :P

in the book willy wonka is quirky, charismatic, decisive and fun..so too should be johnny depp.
the movie though makes both of them turn out to be shy, braindead and rather gay!!!!!!!
A gay willy wonka is as bad as a gay oswald...and a gay oswald is sacrilege!!!!!

@ Rukmini: Yeah, I did notice his teeth. Was he wearing false teeth? And there there, I think your hair looks nice! :)

@ Esmo: You think so? Nowhere does it actually say in the book that Wonka is straight, though. The point is- Depp gave a completely new feel to the character. And as for charismatic and fun, hell yeah!!

@fishy
haha..point taken!!
that would explain why wonka lives wiht waist high men and has no children!!!!!
but seriously...the movie really really should have made wonka more lively and less girly!!

i suppose wonka looks "girly" because that's the stereotypical notion of a creative genius...i mean, look at fashion designers,etcetera...i don't think it's right really, but i'm just saying that that COULD have been a reason

Magically Bored said...

@ Esmo: Trust you to come up with something like that. *sigh*

@ Beyond The Realms Of The Rational Mind: It could be, but then again, some creative geniuses have not an inkling of 'girliness' in them. I guess it's all very vague. :)

Dear God! Has PC not told you *why* they had that absurd take on Wonka?! It wasn't out of whim. The second film is basically parody. A whimsical modernist deconstruction of some of the things the old movie (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) portrayed. And many of the things you see in the movie are meant to satirize today's world. Depp's gay and strange Wonka is supposed to be a parody of Michael Jackson amongst other people

*fervently hopes to spark off another debate on this blog* :P

@ Elendil: Stop trying to spark off debates.. As a matter of fact, I HAD heard that Depp's performance was a parody of Michael Jackson's. But Depp denied it. Aah well, I suppose he would. But no, PC hasn't told us about the modernist deconstruction bit. We haven't discussed the movie in detail as yet, only just started discussing the book.
