A Little Thank You.

In between the note-passing in class and hanging out at Worldview, in between the nail-biting over Internal Assessments and constant laughter, in between the endless cups of Iced Tea and the Icky Pink Days, in between the continuous complaints of "I'm hungry" and random discussions, I have realised that I have made a few absolutely invaluable friends.
This post is a thank-you to them, for being there, always.
Like Queen put it, "Friends will be friends."
I couldn't agree more.
What would I do without you all? Well, I'd get on, but life wouldn't be so much fun, neither would it be as nice.
*hug*

Life's Good. Touch Wood.

Icky Pink Day at college. Endless cups of Iced Tea. Sitting with friends and talking about nothing, yet talking about everything. Spacing out during Middle English class and doing more interesting things. Long conversations on Gtalk. Brief phone calls that make me smile. An air-mailed package. Pasta- smelling of cheese. Watching Wall-E.
*smiles*
Life's good. Touch wood.

An update.

Firstly, I am celebrating my new Unlimited Internet connection. My mom is sick and tired of me exceeding the Broadband Bandwidth limit, so she thought this would be a better option. Now I can download music and movies to my heart's content! Woohoo! Watch out Torrent, here I come!
College has reopened, and thank God for that. It's so much fun being back. Sitting on the Ledge, hanging around near Worldview, laughing about random things, JUDE is the life! This semester will be tough, though- with Old and Middle English and Renaissance Literature hanging over our heads. *pulls hair out in nervousness*
Have watched quite a few movies lately.
First came The Prestige. A film about two magicians in turn-of-the-century London, who keep trying to outdo each other, but at the cost of what...?
It's a brilliant movie. I am just in love with the line "Are you watching closely?" (I actually kept it as my Gtalk status display for a few days!) Also, I am usually a Jackman fan, but I have to say, as much as Jackman was good in this movie, it was Bale who stole the show. I've never particularly liked Bale, but The Prestige has completely changed my opinion! He was mind-blowing. This movie is a *must-watch*. Definitely one of the best films I've seen in quite a while.
Next up, is The Illusionist. Also a movie about magic, starring Edward Norton. IIf you compare it with The Prestige, well- it's nowhere close. But on its own, it's a pretty decent movie. Edward Norton's acting is top-notch, he gives a silent efficiency to his role as Eisenheim. Jessica Biel is rather good as well.
And after these, I watched P.S. I Love You. (Special thanks to Shreya). Beautiful movie. What is love? Is it compromise? Is it a connection? Is it making grief easier? Is it all of these things?
The movie explains how love can cross all kinds of boundaries. It's not your typically cheesy romantic stuff. Gerard Butler is fantastic, great acting combined with fantastic eye-candy looks. (His Irish accent does get a bit garbled at times, though.) Hilary Swank is great as well.
This made for a good watch. Left me feeling all warm and fuzzy.
And lastly, I watched Love Actually. Of course, this one I've seen before. It's one of my all-time favourites. This is a movie you can watch over and again, and never get tired of. You can watch it with friends, you can watch it alone, or you can cuddle up with that special someone and enjoy it. Anything goes. From Hugh Grant's dance down the stairs to Keira Knightley's wedding video, from Colin Firth's disastrous debacles with his Portuguese help to Liam Neeson's love advice to his stepson, from Emma Thompson's wonderful acting to Rowan Atkinson's fabulous guest appearance- this movie tops just about everything else.
Onto the next thing, I have chanced across the recipe for Baked Alaska. I shall be trying it out soon, when Guppy and Divya come to visit next week.
Also, Ma is leaving for a week's trip to London on Monday. I shall have the house to myself. Whayhey! *rolls about in glee* I have told her to get me back bulls-eyes.
I am currently downloading songs from P.S. I Love You, and the movie Bridget Jones' Diary.
My throat feels sore, and my voice is taking on a hoarse-yet-shrill tone. Waah!
Tomorrow is lazy Sunday. My favourite day of the week.
That's more or less the update for now. See you all soon!

It's been a year already.

Yes. It's been a year. It's strange how fast time flies. Dubious cups of coffee drunk at Milon-da's, sitting at the Ledge, lazing around on the grass, friendly adda sessions and random conversations- and before you know it, a year's gone by. Everyone's been saying, "We're the ickle firsties no more." But deep down at heart, I think we always will be.
I've been tagged by Reeti to write about my first day at JUDE. So here goes:
I remember it was a very rainy-stormy day. I had to go to Xaviers in the morning to cancel my admission, got thoroughly drenched, and took a cab to JU. Mom calls up, says, "It's terrible weather. Are you sure you have to go today?" I said, "Yeah, I do." And off I went.
Arunava was a big help. He was waiting for me at the gate with that huge umbrella of his, his trousers rolled up to his knees (I remember thinking, "Wow- he has surprisingly hairy legs!"). He gave me a slight tour of JU, and then, it was time for the admission procedures to start.
The first person I remember looking at was Lav. I recognized him because I'd seen him before at the British Council Play Festival the year before (of course, he had been bald then). He was wearing all-white. (But, of course!) And then, Pujarini came over to me and scolded me for not recognising her. I knew Pujarini too, although I'd never met her before.
One by one, the names were called, and we went in. I was sitting opposite Malobika Sarkar, and Prof.Lal beside her. He smiled at me as I sat down, asked how my brother was. Then Tintin-da says, "Oh, is she Bodhi's sister?" I said, "Yup. That's me." Then he says, "Did you write a poem in your answer script too?" I just smiled mysteriously. Haha!
I made friends with Shreya right after that. She was standing right behind me, I discovered that we had a friend (BDC) in common. So we got to talking, figured out common acquaintances. I guess you could say she was my first college friend. And then I met Mrinalini Sen. She looked familiar, I had the feeling I'd seen her before. We talked too, about theatre, and I realised that we had a common thread too.
I remember filling up my fee book at that little table. I had some doubt about what to write in a particular box, and I think Abhijan was sitting beside me, he helped me out. I might be wrong, it could have been someone else, but I fancy it was him.
The rest of it passed in a blur, and then we were called upstairs, where Insiya made us all introduce ourselves. I remember noticing Somdev, for some reason. And Shreya got up and said, "Hi, I'm Shreya from GDB, and I'm hyperly excited to be here" with that trademark smile of hers!
Then some of the Professors came in, and we were introduced to a certain someone's PJs, and no- I don't mean Moplah. I guess you all know who I'm talking about. But no names mentioned, eh?
Rimi-di warned us all against plagiarism, Tintin-da didn't say much, just smiled a lot, and Amlan-da fluttered his eyelashes. I think Supriya-di talked quite a bit. I remember Pujarini sitting right at the back, and asking Prof.Lal, "When is the JUDE annual theatre production?"
Then it was time to choose the EDs. Lav was very confused about what to take, and Prof.Lal told Arunava to 'help out a fellow Jacobean'.
That's most of what I remember. It was a pretty eventful day. We met each other for the first time. And at the back of everyone's minds was the thought, "Will I fit in? Will I make friends? Will my seniors like me?"
I took some time to settle down, and shake into things. I took a couple of months to get used to JUDE properly. And now of course, I love it like my second home. I've made awesome friends here, I've had awesome times here with them, most of the classes have been great, and so- here's to Second Year!

JUDE picnic

Highlights of the JUDE picnic, at Raichak, on 16th March 2008.
1. Anomitra and Sohini stepping into a pile of God-only-knows-what, I'm assuming dung was a major component. Anomitra stepping out, looking down at her legs, and saying, "Oh crap!"
2. Arindam's stairway seduction- I am truly at a loss for words. I don't think I will ever recover.
3. Somdev 'glaring at people for no apparent reason'.
4. The Dumb-Charades game! (Even though I didn't play.. It was hell hilarious!)
5. Sitting by the gate leading to the river, and feeling the breeze on our faces. Beautiful.
6. Rukmini and Rimi-di's dance. (Rukmini sloshed is FUN!) *grin*
7. Mahadyuti shouting to Deep, "Sit on my face!", Deep looking scandalised, and Mahadyuti hastening to explain, "It's a song! The song!" Also, Mahadyuti's 'passive high'.
8. Fire Condom, Nokia Condom, etc etc. *guffaws*
9. Swinging with Nilanjana and Sohini- I had forgotten what fun swinging could be!
10. The journey back home- right from laughing ourselves silly at random hoardings, to the irrelevant nonsense we talked!
A big hug and thank you to all the people who made this such fun. This was THE BEST picnic I have been on! JUDE truly rocks! Cheers!

Anthem.

Presenting the latest JUDE Ug-1 anthem...

"Banana banana banana-
Trochee trochee...
Banana anapaest iambic pie...
Iambic pie. Hey!
Iambic pie. Hey!
Iambic pie. Hey!
Iambic pie!"

*sigh*
Don't even ask, if you value your sanity.

Lazing around near the jheel.

Attending Rhetoric and Composition class after watching 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' is JUST not possible. I'm sorry, Rimi-di, but Depp is too delectable, and we needed to mull him over in our mind after watching the movie for the Literature and the Other Arts course. *grins*

The day.

Went to college. Headed to KMR. Unbelievably long walk. Waah! Filled up Fee book. Picked up Examination form. Walked to Department, filled it up with R's help. Trotted back. Got the form verified. Stood in line, munched on a Fish Chop, waited for a while, got tired and walked off. Ki hobe? If I give it tomorrow, do I have to get it verified all over again? M says I have to take a whole new form, and repeat the process! *bites nails in anguish*
Sat at Milon-da's, worried about what to write in the Christian and Classical Background test. Did that even during the test. ADG will hit the roof when he sees my answers! But thank you, S! *wink*
After college, walked lethargically back to the Information Counter. Bloody long walk. Grrr! (but there is a very beautiful rainbow in the sky!) Find out that forms can be given tomorrow. Kind man at the counter says I need not get it verified again. Yayness!
Headed with group to Dominoes. S and N's birthday treat! Yummy pizza, lots of noise, complete rubbish talk- *sigh*.. What an enjoyable evening! Sucks to the SPHS people who tried to drown out our noise by cranking up the TV volume!
On a different note, Happy Birthday to you both- have a wonderful year!
Brought home lots of oregano and chilli flakes- all the better to make my ommelettes and pasta with! *grins*
Lovely day. It rained too, and there's a beautiful chill in the air. Winter doesn't want to leave this year... Let's hold on to it as long as we can.
Point to be noted: My name, apparently, is no more... I am being called Arindam! *wails*
Another point to be noted: The Racoon Lord is such a joker! :)

A Midsummer Night's Dream

What a play! I watched Tim Supple's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' last time at Tolly, I seriously didn't think I'd be lucky enough to watch it again. As I said, studying in JUDE has its advantages.
And what advantages! I was bowled over, completely bowled over. The vibrant colours, the effortless dialogue delivery, the sheer amount of grace with which the actors moved- I could go on and on. It isn't easy to make a Shakespeare play in Indian languages- it's quite a big risk to take, in fact. But Tim Supple has pulled it off, and how!
Joy Fernandes, I think, stole the show, with his antics. Puck was good as well, darting about the stage, I loved the rope scene the best. Titania's hair- I'd die for it. And her part was brilliant, hanging suspended in the red silk above the stage for quite a while. I loved the play, every bit of it. Somehow, I think Tolly was a better location- the open air and the breeze really did make it A Midsummer Night's Dream, but Kala Mandir was good too- our attention was more concentrated on the stage.
I don't want to watch it anymore though- you know what they say- too much of a good thing spoils it.
But kudos to Tim Supple, for making a play that's sentimental, funny, erotic and mischievous!

A quick update.

Just dropping in a few lines....
Finally finished 'Robinson Crusoe'. On the whole, well written- but the majority of the book is extremely boring- how long can one continue to read about a man trapped on an island? I didn't like the character much- he seems to get real pleasure from rampant deforestation, he kills cats (!!!!) - and where's the need to convert Friday to Christianity? Talk about arrogance... But yes, the book does have some rather good parts.
Went to Landmark yesterday. Bought two books- 'Dracula', and 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'. Have already started the former. Brilliant so far. I quite like Gothic novels- 'Frankenstein' being another favourite.
So far, have been successful with my promise of reading more books this year. :)
Made myself some pasta this evening.
Oh, and my article on Chef Hartnett's temporary stint at the ITC Sonar Bangla was carried in the January 16 issue of Femina. And for all those who are interested, check out my article on Animation:
College is great fun- we have good courses this semester! The three Core courses are Post Colonial (we've done 'Robinson Crusoe' so far), Literature and the Other Arts (we're going to watch Tim Supple's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' next week- woohoo!) , and Rhetoric and Composition (mainly fun with Rimi-di.) The Extra Departmental is compulsory for all English students- 'Classical Christian Background', and we are currently studying 'The Iliad'.
When we are not having classes, we hang out near Milon-da's, talking about the queer disappearance of stray dogs from the JU campus, and on the same note- wonder what ingredients go into Moni-da's Momos.
Fascinating life, I tell you! :P

After the first week at JUDE...

  • Moni-da's canteen ROCKS. It's not the food- the food is ordinary. It's just that one can't help liking the place, inspite of all the flies. It has a charm of its own. And Moni-da's canteen is always the first place we rush to after Hons. classes. (They suck the energy out of us! We need Moni-da's canteen to rewind!!) And not an hour has gone by this week when I have not mentioned Moni-da's canteen atleast once... (Much to the chagrin of Shreya and Pujarini!)
  • I looooove the ledge! It's the best place to just sit around and chat about random things.
  • It's strange, but I somehow feel I belong here. Does that sound weird? I've waited all my life to get here, and I walked in on the first day with apprehension- but it just seems so natural!
  • Looks like I'm going to enjoy studying in JU. To be very honest, I always thought the English standard in school was waay below me (except for certain texts like 'The Old Man And The Sea' and 'Arms And The Man'). Now when I look at the texts I'm going to be studying, I feel like I've got something I can sink my teeth into. Not literally, of course. I gave up eating paper a long time ago.
  • You know what I like most about JU? The whole atmosphere is so free! Everything's allowed! And no one gives a second glance. It's too chilled out for words. As opposed to other colleges where there are rules everywhere you look!
  • I thought I would let atleast a month or so go by before I bunked my first class. Old habits die hard, I guess. I bunked a class on Wednesday itself.
  • On a more serious note, the campus has waaaayyy too much smoke. There are cigarettes everywhere you look. "Thank you for smoking", it seems JU has taken it seriously.
  • Thought I would have trouble making friends. But it was nowhere as bad as I imagined. Shreya, Pujarini and I have already formed a little threesome, and apart from that- I've gotten to know a few others in the department. Not bad.
  • Yes, I love it here!

I made it...

This is where I belong now - JUDE.
(Isn't it nice when something you've always dreamed of falls right into your lap?)
I passed the acid test. Proved I AM good enough. Proved to others. And more importantly, proved to myself.
Jadavpur University, Department of English- here I come!
As of now, I am starting a new chapter in my life. College.
It still feels surreal. Being part of the BEST English department around.
That's where I belong now - JUDE.
